Here are some more photos from my family photo shoot a couple weeks ago.  I had a lot more shots but like I said with yesterday’s post, it is tough to get good shots when you are in front of the camera.  These are the best of the best from the shoot.  Please give me come critique on the processing, composition, and so on.  I know they aren’t perfect, especially the one where my sisters head is in front of my Dad’s head a bit.

Thanks for the advice!

The Kids

Simple post today.  I was able to attempt to take family pictures a couple of weekends ago.  It was defiantly difficult to get a well composed photo when you are not behind the camera.  This is one I got with us three kids.  I still have to process the rest of the images.

I’m pretty pumped for a couple trips coming up.  One to St. Louis to watch a good friend run in a marathon.  Then the second to the far Northeast, Maine.  I’m pretty excited for this 1,500 mile drive to capture some wonderful landscapes in the early winter.

Trapped

Quick post today.  Been busy all night applying to some great looking jobs.  Hopefully one turns out to be the one!

Today’s image is another from my practice shoot with a macro lens.  I kinda like this one better over all.  The focus is better and I like the composition a little more.  Let me know what you think.

After dinner last night I noticed my father-in-laws venus flytraps.  I immediately thought to myself what a great subject to practice some macro photography with.  So I grabbed my camera and started shooting away.  This is one of my favorites I took.  I’m going to process a couple more and see what I get.  Remember critiquing is welcome!

Today is the last image from my little hike to the High Trestle Bridge.  It’s a simple image but I really kinda like it for some reason.  The title of this post comes from the red veins of poison ivy climbing up the trees in the image.  It’s pretty awesome to see the stark red move its way up the still green trees.  So I had to try to capture this.  I wish the veins were more dense to fill in that hole lacking of veins.  Oh well, just gotta make due with what your given.

Yesterday I had a great twitter conversation with Chris Nitz, Dave Wilson, and David Baker about critiquing fellow bloggers photos.  I want you to know that I post my photos to be critiqued.  Critiquing by you saying, “I don’t like this because…” or something in that manner.  I like to hear the negative with the positive. It’s how I have been trained in college to learn and grow.  So I welcome all of your words of wisdom, so please don’t be shy.  I’ll be sure to cry just only a little bit  ; )

I hope everyone has a great weekend!  Go Cyclones, let’s go 4-0!

This is the gorgeous view looking over the Des Moines River Valley from the High Trestle Bridge.  The photo does the view only half the justice.

Agave Wheat

Happy Friday everyone!  I thought I would post a beer label for this Friday in the spirit of this weekend.  First, it’s the beginning of the NFL on Sunday!  But, before that it is the Iowa State vs. Iowa game on Saturday.  There will be some good tailgating Saturday morning before the game at 11:30.  GO CYCLONES!  Yet again, before that I have my brother’s football game tonight.  It is going to be a fantastic weekend full football!

With football comes good beer…Agave Wheat

I had to try it after reading it was really brewed with agave.  It is a very strong and heavy for a wheat beer and of course it goes well with Mexican food.  The spicier the better!  It is a very tasty beer that keeps you wanting more.  I found I was at the bottom of glass before I knew it.  If you find it, give it a try.

I hope everyone has a great weekend!  Go get some great shots this weekend!

hope everyone had a great three day weekend!  I know I did!  Unfortunately it’s time to get back to the real world.  Oh well, it’s almost time for the regular season for the NFL.  Can’t wait to see what the Broncos can do this year.

Anyways, today we have another image from the great urbex place I found a awhile back.  I took this shot partly to test the lens distortion on the Nikon 10-24mm AF-S f/3.5-4.5G ED DX.  There was really no distortion (click thumbnail below to see).  You can see a little up at the top of the frame where the cross beam is.  The distortion was easily fixed using Photoshop CS5′s lens correction filter.

Kade

Happy Labor Day everyone!  I hope everyone is having a great three day weekend.

I found this place just off a park in Ames a few months ago.  It’s a pretty cool Urbex place.  I had run and rollarbladed by this area so many times and never noticed it.  Mainly because the area would be behind my back.  One day I finally slowed down and decided to look behind me.  Sure enough slowing down and turning around paid off like it usually does.  I have learned over the past couple of years to never forget to take a look behind me and see where I had been.  Sometimes those angles for the camera lens are better then the ones when you are moving forward.

Another photo from my brother’s football game.  I have to be honest there will be several photos from his games as the season goes on.  Taking photos at his games are awesome practice for high speed shooting in low lighting.  Most of the photos I take are with my step dad’s old 1970′s lens as well.  So it gives me great practice with the manual focus and using the manual setting on the camera.  It’s a lot of good fun!  With this photo I used my more modern lens (18mm-105mm) for a wider view.  I have been also experimenting with using the sun to back light subjects.  This one didn’t turn out too bad.  The affect this technique gives really catches my eye for some reason.
